The Theobald Smith Society is proud to belatedly congratulate Dr. Jeffrey M. Boyd on his recent promotion to Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rutgers University. He was promoted on July 1. Jeff has served as our ASM Branch Counselor since 2022, following two terms as the Society’s President from 2018 to 2020. In his role as Branch Counselor, he has been a steadfast supporter of our mission to advance microbiology and foster a vibrant scientific community in New Jersey.
Professor Boyd’s research career has been marked by groundbreaking work in microbial physiology, biochemistry, and pathogenesis. His laboratory investigates the complex mechanisms bacteria use to manage essential processes such as metal ion homeostasis, biofilm formation, and resistance to environmental stresses. His team’s studies of Staphylococcus aureus physiology and iron-sulfur cluster biogenesis have advanced fundamental understanding of bacterial metabolism and revealed promising antimicrobial targets.
Over the years, Jeff has secured substantial funding from the NIH, NSF, USDA, and industry partners, published extensively in top-tier journals, and mentored numerous undergraduate, graduate, and postdoctoral researchers who have gone on to successful scientific careers. His dedication to research excellence and mentorship exemplifies the values of our Society and the broader ASM community.
Please join us in congratulating Professor Jeff Boyd on this well-deserved recognition of his outstanding scientific contributions, leadership, and service. We look forward to seeing his continued impact on microbiology in New Jersey and beyond.
