Scientific Societies United: Filing an Amicus Brief to Reinstate NIH Funding

ree

On August 1, 2025, the American Society for Microbiology (ASM), alongside the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB), the American Society for Cell Biology (ASCB), and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), filed an expanded amicus brief in American Public Health Association v. NIH before the U.S. Supreme Court.

These four leading life-science organizations initially submitted an amicus brief on May 2, urging judicial recognition that the abrupt termination of NIH grants—specifically impacting early-career scientists via programs like the MOSAIC initiative—was unlawful, and demanding rapid restoration of support.

In their updated filing, the societies underscore the immediate and irreparable harm wrought by the canceled grants, calling on the Court to deny the government’s request for a stay, which would allow the NIH to continue withholding funding while the case proceeds. The brief is bolstered by fresh evidence from peer-reviewed studies and expert commentary highlighting the real-world damage—disrupted careers, stalled research, and a blow to U.S. scientific leadership—that has already occurred.

Collectively, these organizations represent more than 150,000 biomedical researchers whose work underpins innovation, public health, and economic growth.
